Poor sweet Brando. We'll never know exactly where he came from, what his life used to be like, or why he ended up in such bad shape in a crowded shelter. But he was in bad shape for sure, so we were asked to help him like we help the others that no one else wants.
Brando got a much-needed haircut and a bath before he visited our vet. Then it was time for blood work and a thorough exam. We found a short list of problems, but unfortunately the problems are all pretty severe: a bad heart murmur makes it unsafe to take care of his bad teeth (not to mention neutering), his eyes are in bad shape but he absolutely refuses to let any drops get in there, and he's got arthritis in his back legs which keeps him from walking or standing for too long. We were worried that he may have Addison's disease as well, but a re-check ruled that out so we're thinking it's just IBD: this has been successfully controlled with a low (and inexpensive) daily dose of prednisone. One more thing on the list, that we didn't need our vet to tell us- Brando is more than a bit senile, and although he spends most of his time sleeping he does get confused easily and is unlikely to ever make progress with house training.
Despite the bad news, we're so happy that Brando is with us. Yes, we're happy we saved him, but honestly he is just so sweet and goofy in his own way, he's been an absolute joy to have in foster care. He loves the other dogs and will absolutely need to go to a home where he can be friends with at least one calm and friendly pup. He loves to snuggle with the bigger dogs and was especially excited when a new foster came into the pack (our biggest dog currently, Raven). We're not sure how he knows who and where these dogs are, but he has a very good sense of who is biggest and who will allow him to cuddle.
Brando is not going to be a good fit for the average home, but we're sure there is a special place out there for this very special boy. If you can't adopt, please share Brando's story and help us find him a forever family!
