We're a senior rescue, so lumps and bumps don't scare us a bit. When we were asked to take in a Chihuahua with a mammary tumor, we didn't hesitate: we knew the tumor could be removed during spay surgery. Boy were we surprised when Jane arrived, with not one but two mammary tumors plus a handful of other large lumps. This skinny little girl seemed to be made up mostly of tumors, and although they didn't bother her we knew there was potential for issues. Jane went to the vet right away, and soon underwent one of two surgeries that she needed to be healthy.

Surgery number one took off the two mammary tumors, plus one big hanging lump on her leg. She was also spayed at that time. Biopsy revealed that while the mammary tumors were benign, the tumor on her leg was cancerous. Thankfully our vet was able to get clean margins on the removal, so we believe Jane is now cancer-free. The other tumors were just fatty masses, so we opted to let them alone rather than put Jane through more tough recovery for purely cosmetic reasons. Surgery number two was for dental issues, and Jane had six rotten teeth removed and her healthy teeth cleaned and polished. A much easier recovery, although Jane was a model patient through both procedures and follow-up treatment.

It's easy to focus on solely medical issues when dealing with a dog like this, but Jane's gentle temperament did not go unnoticed. Although she has been pretty anti-big dogs, Jane has done well in the pack and really seems to enjoy the company of the small dogs and cats. Anyone littler than a beagle has escaped her wrath, and we believe she would be fine to share her home with other small creatures and older children. Jane has not shown any aggression with new people and has done great with house training. She rides well in the car and walks nicely on leash. She loves attention and even accepts gentle smooches on her little head. Despite the massive financial undertaking, we are so glad that we took Jane into our rescue. It's hard to imagine such a sweet girl being stuck in a noisy shelter, when what she really deserves are soft beds and a sunny yard. Please consider spoiling Jane for her remaining years, and making up for all the time she lost being neglected and alone.
